About Us

Our story

Halton Black Voices was born out of the need for a collective platform to amplify the voices, experiences, and needs of Black communities in Halton. Established in June 2020 during a time of heightened awareness of systemic racism and social justice, our organization emerged as a response to calls for meaningful change.

What started as a grassroots movement quickly evolved into a dedicated organization committed to advocacy, education, and community-building. From day one, our mission has been to foster a sense of belonging, provide resources and opportunities, and create spaces where Black individuals and families can thrive.

Our Intentions

Halton Black Voices is a new collective, intended to bring youth, families and individuals together. Our purpose is to create a safe space in the Halton region for all Black people including the 2SLGBTQQIA community, where we can establish new connections. We aim to build stronger communities by raising awareness, educating, and empowering Black community members of all ages. We also intend to connect with allies for reciprocal educational opportunities, with the intention of creating spaces of mutual understanding and respect.

Our struggle for equity is bound together with the struggles of Indigenous communities of the land where many of our ancestors were transported and enslaved. Indigenous liberation is a prerequisite for Black liberation, so the work of Halton Black Voices will be closely tied to our Indigenous community members in Halton.

Halton Black Voices is more than an organization—it’s a community. We create programs, events, and initiatives that support mental health, physical well-being, cultural awareness, and personal growth. From youth mentorship and educational workshops to community events and market spaces for Black-owned businesses, our work is rooted in building connections and addressing the unique challenges faced by the Black community in Halton.

Our Core Principles

  • Experience alternative learning opportunities rooted in anti-oppression, equity and inclusion.

  • Transform awareness into action. Creating spaces and experiences for underserved residents and newcomers.

  • We organize collective Black healing events and initiatives to support the mental health and well-being of the community.

  • We aim to build stronger communities by raising awareness, educating, and empowering Black community members and allies of all ages and abilities.

Testimonials

The space provided a sense of belonging and togetherness where we felt safe and empowered to discuss the struggles as well as success we have had dealing with systematic racism, anti Blackness as well as white supremacy within our individual lives.

I believe this space that’s been created and helps Black kids is great. An amazing organization that I would have loved my daughter to be on. From hearing her brother’s sessions she often asks ‘When is my tutoring?’ This is a testament that clearly demonstrates the strong appeal of your program to kids!
