Board of Directors
Individuals who sit on the board are responsible for overseeing the collective’s activities and resources. Board members meet periodically - monthly to discuss and vote on the affairs of the collective. At a minimum, an bi-annual meetings must occur with all Board Members present. Most positions are filled.
Ubuntu is a Zulu word, popularized by Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu, both South African Nobel Peace laureates. Simply put, it means “I am, because you are,” and has its roots in humanist African philosophy, where the idea of community is one of the building blocks of society.
Elders & Activists Steering circle
The creation of the Elder & Activists Steering Circle is to serve in an advisory capacity to the Board of Directors and Advisory & Sustainability Circle, to distinguish the needs of the underserved and elderly community. Halton Black Voices seeks to bring together a diverse community of Elders & Activists in order to advocate and provide guidance around issues of mental health, affordable housing, education, food insecurity and collective healing. The members will bring their deep knowledge around equity and restorative justice to support Halton Black Voices on best practices of activism and advocacy. This committee will also organize on how to advocate for Black lives and Black liberation on a local level. Seeking 7-10 diverse individuals.
Advisory & Sustainability Circle
The Advisory and Sustainability Circle serves as critical community champions of the HBV Collective. This committee will provide financial and sustainability advice to Halton Black Voices' Board of Directors. Members will share their gifts in service to our vision by providing our collective with their professional and lived expertise; their diverse knowledge of constituent perspectives; their connections to local, national or international resources, colleagues or peers; their philanthropic support and guidance regarding charitable finances. Currently seeking 7-10 individuals with financial and charity experience for participation on this committee.
HBSU leadership circle
The HBSU Leadership is an elected group of students that meets twice a month throughout the school year. It is made up of student representatives from HDSB, HCDSB and private board secondary schools. Being involved in HBSU Leadership Circle also provides leadership opportunities for students as they advocate and learn the purpose and work of leadership and activisms.
