CONFRONTING ALLYSHIP
It is important to remember that white people cannot proclaim themselves to be allies, as this serves to recenter white people in someone else’s struggle. Allyship is not an identity that one can borrow when it feels comfortable or trendy. Being a true ally is an ongoing journey and an active process that requires daily practice.
Build connections with community members from diverse backgrounds to learn about our different experiences and empower one another to join a movement towards a more equitable society. Through reciprocal educational opportunities with individuals and other collectives, Halton Black Voices will create a safe space of mutual understanding and respect. People standing in positions of privilege will learn how to acknowledge this privilege and take direction from BIPOC about how they might be contributing to racial hierarchies by questioning their role in perpetuating inequitable social structures. We will work together to dismantle all forms of oppression, violence, and brutality against BIPOC community members. As a more informed and socially conscious collective, we will think critically about the roles we have all played in maintaining current inequities and discover new pathways towards a more fair and just society together.
