Building a Movement: How Halton Black Voices is Shaping the Future | Burlington Local-News

In the wake of global conversations about racial inequity, Gennile Thomas-Smith saw a need for change — one that moved beyond discussion to meaningful, lasting action. As the founder of the non-profit organization Halton Black Voices (HBV), she envisioned a space where Black residents in Halton could share their stories, celebrate their culture, and advocate for systemic change.

Community champions honoured at the 21st Oakville Community Spirit Awards | Oakville.ca

On June 8, 2023, the community gathered at Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre for a sold-out Oakville Community Spirit Awards, celebrating individuals, organizations, businesses and community groups who have demonstrated ongoing leadership, dedication and involvement in Oakville.

A strong community is built upon differences. What would the world be like if we all embrace our differences and were kind, helpful, and compassionate towards each other? This question is the basis behind our 2022 theme – Unity: We’re not the same, but we’re equal!

 
 

Addressing Racial Injustice in Schools | Halton Youth Initiative

We chose to focus on racial injustice in schools for a few reasons. We wanted to keep the momentum going after our insightful Black Lives Matter panel event. There were two incidents of racist graffiti at Georgetown and Oakville schools during December 2019. Social justice movements continued to be at the forefront of youth activism following the summer of 2020. And, because many of our teammates come from racialized and intersectional backgrounds.
