Equity Learning Space

Experience alternative learning rooted in anti-oppression, equity, and inclusion. Our curriculum, led by Black educators, covers Black history, stolen legacies, and white supremacy in a safe, collaborative space. We also partner with community collectives to learn from Indigenous Wisdom Carriers about Indigenous history, Truth and Reconciliation, and land acknowledgments. By offering relevant educational opportunities, Halton Black Voices fosters interest in higher education and supports Black and Indigenous cultural creation, building spaces where BIPOC can thrive.

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.

Summer + March Break Programs

HBV Anti Racism Literacy Program is intended to address barriers in the classroom and at school among Black and students of colour. We acknowledge and support that diversity, equity, and justice are more important now than ever—and that our learning can never start too early. But how do you approach an anti-racist education? Our literacy program is centered on the believes that one way is through age-appropriate Black literature and storytelling. Students interact with books and create meaning in a way that educate, inform and affirm student identity. By creating lessons that center the voices and stories of the global majority, we are implicitly teaching the values of equity, inclusion and diversity and demonstrating their importance in both name and practices. Through purposefully curated books that center and amplify Black students and the multiculturalism that makes up Canadian identity students are better equipped to understand the critical importance of creating and sustaining an atmosphere of kindness, compassion and empathy all inherent pieces that will work to foster anti-racist education.

Black Youth Wellness Camp This program empowers students to challenge negative societal stereotypes and recognize their inherent strength. Through learning the power of positive self-talk and self-compassion, participants will not only foster a better understanding of themselves but also develop compassion towards others, enhancing their interpersonal relationships and personal growth. The camp also introduces mindfulness meditation, teaching participants its benefits and practical methods to incorporate it into their daily lives. Over three days, the Mental Health Self Series workshops will further develop their communication skills and understanding of cognitive distortions, aiding them in making thoughtful decisions.
